Stones and Ditches

Back to Guided Walks page

A walk along the Oxfordshire Way with views over the Evenlode then joining Shakespeare's Way with views of the house at Ditchley Park. A return via Grim's Ditch to Charlbury where reasonable lunches can be pre-ordered at The Bell.

The Evenlode is a very scenic valley giving wide views. Stonesfield was formerly the source of Cotswold stone roofing tiles which were mined around the village. Ditchley Park is a fine country house in a wooded estate which is now used for high level conferences but formerly owned by Sir Henry Lee a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I. The Iron Age monument Grim's Ditch on the Ditchley Park Estate survives well as a visible earthwork for almost its entire length.
