Charlbury Beer Festival

The fourteenth Charlbury Beer Festival will be held at Charlbury Cricket Club (three minutes’ walk from Charlbury station). As always, all money raised will go directly to good causes, and this year there will be some exciting new features too. The Charlbury Beer Festival is now a significant regional event and wishes to provide additional entertainment for our visitors by celebrating a local Oxfordshire pastime – Aunt Sally. This is a popular pub game played nearly exclusively in Oxfordshire although there are leagues as far away as Spain and Australia. Teams of 8 compete by trying to knock the ‘dolly’ off a spike by throwing ‘sticks’ from 10 yards. It sounds odd but is great fun and strangely absorbing. So join us for a fun-filled family day out, with live music and entertainment.

Historic Bus Rally with GWR

Following on from the success of our three previous Bus Rallies, and last year we weren’t affected too badly by it being the Football World Cup Final Day; this year we clash with the British F1 Grand Prix held at Silverstone! Despite the day chosen we are working with the GWR Diesel Department to make it a good weekend. The Diesel Gala runs from the 9th through to 10th July, and is a well established event.

Again as last year we will be hoping to run a bus service from Toddington to Broadway, and this year to join our two sections of operational railway a ‘Rail Replacement Service’ to and from Winchcombe, to link in with the timings of the services on both sections. All will be conditional on the availability or willingness of the bus drivers to do either of the trips. The format will be similar to the previous events and in anticipation of the number of busses attending with associated traffic movements, and commercial stalls, all parking for volunteers & visitors apart from a very few staff members will be in the field.

The other good news is that we are holding last years prices for the stalls – please note however that there are only TWO days for the Diesel Gala 9th & 10th July this year. The stall-holders’ vehicles that cannot be parked within their pitches will also be directed to the field. The remaining un-allocated spaces at the back of the Flag & Whistle will be used as an overflow for the Disabled Bays by the loading bank.

If there is anyone else who might be interested in attending the event with a bus or a stall please give them a form downloadable from the links. I will endeavour to make contact with the others whom I know of, and that are not web-wise, by post.

Creativity in Transylvania, captured by photographs of the revival of its historic buildings and a small display of objects showing the return of traditional craftsmanship in present-day Romania, will be shown alongside a selection of paintings by Marianne and Adrian Stokes. The Stokes took inspiration from both the English Arts & Crafts Movement and from the rapidly changing Carpathians at the turn of the last century.

Open every day, 10am to 5pm.

Longborough Festival Opera – Siegfried – Wagner

Siegfried
Richard Wagner
Sung in German with English surtitles
23, 25, 28, 30 July 2011

CONDUCTOR Anthony Negus
DIRECTOR Alan Privett

This, the third part of the Ring Cycle, was Wagner’s own favourite. He described it as:“the most beautiful of my life’s dreams.”

All performances start at 3.30pm. 30 minute short interval. 75 minute dining interval.

At Longborough, we have a fully-fledged opera house seating 480, complete with an orchestra pit accommodating up to 65 players. It is built in the grounds of our house on the edge of the Cotswold village of Longborough with beautiful views across the Evenlode Valley, and has been included in the latest Pevsner guide to buildings in England. In 2007 the building had a major face lift: a new façade and a new insulated raised roof were added, together with a new staircase and grand upper foyer.

Longborough Festival Opera – Falstaff – Verdi

Welcome to Longborough Festival Opera.

The third opera in this summer’s Festival will be a new production of Verdi’s Falstaff, conducted by Jonathan Lyness and directed and designed by Richard Studer. Verdi’s final masterpiece, full of lyrical melodies, this opera is romantic and comical the same time as we watch the pompous Falstaff tricked by the wealthy wives of Windsor. Simon Thorpe sings the title role and Linda Richardson (Butterfly in 2010) makes a welcome return as Alice Ford, with Gaynor Keeble joining them as Mistress Quickly. Longborough has a strong commitment to the involvement of young people in productions and Falstaff offers local schoolchildren opportunities to take part.

Fresh Air 2011 sculpture exhibition

The Fresh Air exhibition is a unique biennial art event described as one of the UK’s leading contemporary sculpture shows, which even the British weather can’t dampen, being held in Gloucestershire from Sunday 19 June to Sunday 10 July 2011.

Featuring more than 200 works by more than 100 artists, from the traditional to the cutting edge, an eclectic array of sculptures will be on display in the stunning Cotswold surrounds of Quenington Old Rectory’s five acres of gardens and grounds, near Cirencester.

And, we aren’t talking garden gnomes – the impressive collection of sculptures are made from a variety of materials including bronze, glass, stainless steel, stone, ceramic, marble, wood, fabric, plastic and resin, as well as multi-media installations.

In 2011, expect to see huge pots to withstand the climate, textiles invented not to fade, surprising metal work and worked glass which changes according to the time, light and weather. Inspired by the beauty of the Cotswold garden, there are also six artists making site-specific installations in trees, flower beds and the river at this 10th biennial Fresh Air.

Plus, don’t miss the wacky white plastic bag flowers of Claudia Borgna, Taz Lovejoy’s red, white and blue resin bananas, beautiful lettering from Gary Breeze and great coloured banners courtesy of Shona Watt, not to mention the grand ceramics of Svend Bayer, Wendy Hoare and Andrew Flint.

Created by an eclectic mix of emerging and established local, national and international artists, prices range from £100 to £15,000 with one or two more expensive pieces fetching up to £35,000 – with all exhibits available to buy or simply browse and enjoy.

Scuttlebrook Wake

The Scuttlebrook Wake is celebrated mainly on the Saturday afternoon, after the Robert Dover’s Olimpicks, with a procession of the Scuttlebrook Queen and the crowning of the new queen in the Square.  There is a colourful display of imaginative fancy dress and decorated floats, children dance round the maypole.  And after all this the Street Fair is declared open.
