GREAT CHARLBURY BREAKFAST TO CELEBRATE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF FARMERS’ MARKET

Oxfordshire food lovers are invited to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Charlbury Farmers’ Market, in the historic Cotswolds market town of Charlbury, this weekend.

Charlbury Farmers’ Market, which has trebled in size since its inception, trades on the 2nd Saturday quarterly between 9am and 1pm on a central green in Charlbury known as The Playing Close OX7 3QP.

On September 10, shoppers can tuck into the Great Charlbury Breakfast, a sumptuous breakfast made with local produce from the market stallholders. People are advised to arrive promptly to be sure of securing a feast for a subsidised price of £2.

The joint founders and organisers of Charlbury Farmers’ Market are egg producer Nick Potter and honey farmer Geoff Burroughs, both of Charlbury, and businessman Roger Watts, of Milton-under-Wychwood.

Reflecting on the past decade, they say: “It’s amazing – Charlbury Farmers’ Market is ten years old! The first market took place in July 2001 with 10 stalls, of which five are still with us. Since then, the market has grown steadily and today we now have 30 stalls on a regular basis. Everyone is invited to the Great Charlbury Breakfast in the superb setting of The Playing Close, so please come and join us!”

Three breakfast options will be available, a breakfast bap of egg, bacon and sausage; a vegetarian breakfast bap with egg, mushrooms and tomatoes; a continental style breakfast will feature local preserves, honey and fruit. Apple juice will also be served. A separate stall will provide teas and coffees.

Stalls still trading at Charlbury Farmers’ Market after 10 years are:
Bensons Apple Juice
Callow Farm Products
Halcyon Honey
Lees Rest Free Range Eggs
Shaken Oak Mustards

Charlbury Farmers’ Market is administered by Thames Valley Farmers’ Market Co-operative Ltd (www.tvfm.co.uk). The 10th anniversary celebration will see the organisers ringing the historic ‘Charlbury Market bell’ and saying a few words about Charlbury Farmers’ Market, with a cake-cutting ceremony at 11am. Additional attractions on the day will include musical entertainment.

Health and the Natural Environment Workshop

The Cotswolds Conservation Board and Local Government Group (LGG) will be hosting a workshop entitled ‘Health and the Natural Environment’ on Tuesday 27th September at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester.

The Board and LGG recognise that the positive benefits to physical health and mental wellbeing to be gained from access to the natural environment are well documented. See for example Newton, J. (2007) "Wellbeing and the Natural Environment: A brief overview of the evidence."

The NHS and public health white papers set out proposals for far reaching changes to health policy. The transfer of responsibility for public health from the NHS into local government will lead to greater emphasis on the role of local government and its partners in improving the health of the public and tackling health inequalities. With this comes the opportunity to act more broadly on the social and environmental determinants of health and to utilise the health promoting assets within our communities and our natural surroundings.

The Workshop will aim to:

• increase knowledge and understanding of how the natural environment can contribute to improved health and wellbeing of communities and individuals and share this amongst local authorities, commissioning groups, community organisations and other partners;
• map existing assets and interventions that promote the use of the natural environment of the Cotswolds AONB for improving health and wellbeing;
• seek out further opportunities particularly, though not exclusively, through partnership working with local authorities, primary care trusts and the emerging clinical commissioning groups;
• develop pilot schemes with local partners that would be able to demonstrate increased health and wellbeing outcomes at lower cost.
• showcase such interventions and share learning for the benefit of others.

To book your place at the workshop, please contact the Cotswolds Conservation Board on 01451 862000 or email claire.parker@cotswolds-nl.org.uk
