Our popular Thatching Taster Courses have returned once again to our Rural Skills programme. Participants took part in a "Thatching Taster Day" at the Old Prison in Northleach, the first to be held by the Conservation Board for over five years!

The day proved to be a great success with students learning all about the craft of straw thatching and the skills and tools involved in making a traditional thatched roof.

Dan Quartermain, a Master Thatcher from the Cotswolds, was the instructor for the day along with his apprentice Elijah. Dan has been involved with the art of thatching for over 30 years, specialising in both historic and new thatch buildings. Having been the long term thatchers for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Dan's company were entrusted with repairing Anne Hathaway's Cottage; one of the most famous thatched houses in England.

Future thatching courses are due to place at the Old Prison next Spring and Summer - watch this space!

In the meantime the public can view the results of our Thatching Taster day in the Old Prison courtyard.
