New grassland champions arrive in the Cotswolds

The Saving our Magnificent Meadows project continues apace in the Cotswolds with the arrival of two new members of project staff.
Eleanor Reast and Katherine Holmes have joined the Board as Conservation Officer and Community Engagement Officer, as part of the national project funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund and led by Plantlife.

History in the making

The Conservation Board's first ever charcoal burn took place recently at Ullenwood, following the arrival of the new kiln. Look out for conservation charcoal for sale at the Old Prison Northleach and charcoal burning training courses coming soon!


Visioning the landscape of the future

Some of the best minds in the environmental sector came together recently at a meeting jointly organised by the Countryside & Community Research Institute (CCRI) and the Conservation Board to consider the future landscape of the Cotswolds.
With a diverse mix of conservationists, planners, environmentalists, economists, university professors and land management experts, the panel of 25 debated how climate change and globalisation could impact on the AONB landscape in the longer term. The findings and conclusions from the session will be available shortly. 


Woodland improvement grant scheme extended - apply now!

The Woodfuel Woodland Improvement Grant (WIG) has been extended and is open for applications – but only until the end of September this year. So, if you have any roads schemes in mind get your applications in as soon as possible.

Holiday cottage company raises over £3000 for Cotswolds Visitor Giving Scheme

Manor Cottages, the Burford-based company promoting over 250 holiday cottages across the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, has raised over £3000 during the first six months of joining the Cotswolds Visitor Giving Scheme in 2013.

Winchcombe benefits from visitor giving

A community group in the Walkers are Welcome town of Winchcombe has been able to complete a missing section of hard surface footpath along the 42-mile Winchcombe Way thanks to a grant award from to the Cotswolds Visitor Giving Scheme.

The new 2014 Explore the Cotswolds by Public Transport guide has been published. Covering the period June – December 2014, the handy guide provides an overview of bus and rail services across the Cotswolds, with detailed timetables available online.

People and communities

Near record levels for Voluntary Wardens

Our Cotswold Voluntary Wardens achieved near record levels last year, helping to look after the AONB for the benefit and enjoyment of others. Last year, despite it being the wettest winter on record, they dedicated over 45,000 hours on a vast range of conservation, access and promotional work.

LEADER bid success

The Board’s request for preparatory funding to support the development of a new LEADER (Rural Development Programme Funding) group to cover the Cotswolds AONB was successful and agreed in full at £17,848. The LEADER programme will focus on rural economic growth and employment opportunities across the Cotswolds.

New Secretary of State appointees

Three new appointments to the Cotswolds Conservation Board have been confirmed by the Secretary of State for Defra.
Sheila Gunn MBE, Dr David Thackray and George Lambrick will help steer and champion the Conservation Board in its management of the AONB and enhancement of the social and economic well-being of local communities.
